CHAPTER FORTY TWO

Reece stepped out of Adrian’s villa just after 11:00 p.m. and eased the door shut with a quiet click. He’d been sitting around waiting impatiently for Andre and Adrian to retire for the evening, forgetting that both men were nocturnal. The house had finally silenced, giving him the perfect opportunity to slip away undetected. He slid into his jacket and breathed a sigh of relief. He’d made it without any drama, or so he thought. When he turned to leave, Andre was standing outside the portico gates, waiting for him. He was dressed in black jeans, black sweater and black, knee-length leather jacket.

“Where are you going? Wouldn’t be trying to sneak out on me, would you?” he asked, trying to conceal his amusement at Reece’s attempt to leave without him. “Remember our agreement?”

“I’m not going to the church, if that’s what you’re thinking. I’m heading to the nightclub.”

“Good. I’ll come with you. There’s something I want to show you.”

“What?”

“You’ll see when we get there.”

Reece was annoyed with himself for being caught out. “Fine. Let’s go.”

They arrived at the club around midnight, and Reece parked the Mustang in the alley. He briefed Andre on the risks of being with him. “Stick close. And be aware that your being here could pose some serious problems for us, especially if Jacques is here tonight. We need to keep a low profile.”

“I understand.”

The pair got out of the car and headed to the street. When they approached the entrance, the doorman spotted Andre and bowed his head as the two men walked past him and into the nightclub.

“Did you see that?” Andre asked.

“Yeah. He thought you were Jacques. That could prove very useful.”

“Wait a minute. Didn’t you say we had to keep a low profile?”

“I know what I said. But that could be a way out, if we need it.” He pushed through the crowd, Andre close behind. They moved to the end of the bar and Reece sat on a stool close to the exit. Remembering Andre had something to show him he asked, “What did you want to show me?”

“Be patient. I haven’t forgotten.”

“All right. But I’m curious.” He leaned an elbow on the bar and noticed the bartender at the other end of the counter. “Want a drink?”

“No, thanks.”

Reece scanned the dance floor hoping to see Cassandra. No such luck.

“Cassandra not here?”

“How’d you...?” Andre gave him a you know what I am look and Reece understood. “I really liked her. I guess I blew it, didn’t I?”

“Women have a way of getting over things. You could be pleasantly surprised.”

Reece sighed and continued watching the dancing crowd. “I don’t think so. She’s young and attractive. She could have any guy she wants, so why waste her time with me?”

Jacques entered the nightclub from the alley and moved along the dark narrow passage, the tails of his long black coat billowing behind him as he moved swiftly toward the hazy, noise-filled room. When he reached the doorway he stopped, his instincts alerting him to his brother’s presence.
